This is very important to know since periodic maintenance of your air conditioning units may require additional refrigerant to ensure that they are operating at peak efficiency.
Unfortunately, as the supply and availability of R22 declines the prices will go up. In fact, the prices for R22 have already increased over 300% in the past few years. The phase out of R22 will be complete in 2020 and prices are only going to continue to rise.
At this time you have three options:
- You can choose to keep your existing air conditioning equipment and accept the reality that as we move closer to 2020, if you happen to need R22 refrigerant to maintain your equipment, it will become increasingly difficult to find in the marketplace and it will be priced accordingly from our suppliers.
- You can choose to keep your existing air conditioning equipment and instead opt to use a U.S. EPA permitted “modern” refrigerant. However, choosing to do this may involve replacing a significant number of parts on your equipment since not all refrigerants are the same. Additionally, if you do choose to use a different refrigerant than what your system was originally designed to use it may result in lower performance and higher energy costs.
- You can choose to replace your old air conditioning equipment with a new, high-efficiency unit that does not use R22,but instead uses other refrigerants like R410a that are less harmful to the environment and that are permitted by the Environmental Protection Agency. These units will give you many years of dependable service and lower-cost cooling.
